The Owners say...
"The restoration of La Rabiole has occupied us for several years, and we are pleased to offer guests the chance to share this with us: Our times at La Rabiole have become dear to our hearts, and it is our wish that you have a similar feeling"
Driving up the cypress lined road to La Rabiole it is easy to imagine yourself in a coach and horses as the impressive front facade of the house comes into view. A large gravelled area offers plenty of parking space for a number of cars.
Although there is an easier ground floor entrance, there is no place to start other than up the hedge lined steps , through the heavy oak front door with intricate carving, and into the impressive Hall.
The polished hardwood floor runs the length of the building to the windows overlooking the garden and pool at the far end, and also extends through all the rooms on the First floor. Some occasional furniture is placed at various points along the walls, and, as throughout La Rabiole, a carefully chosen and restricted number of pictures are on the wall.
The layout of this First Floor is very simple, with three rooms off each side of the Hall. Decoration throughout is contemporary and minimalist, and has been subtly combined with traditional features, giving a spacious and peaceful feeling whilst retaining the elegance and the grandeur of the building.
Starting from the front door:-
The impressive Sitting Room has a large fireplace, comfortable sofas and occasional chairs. The television is discreetly tucked into a built in cupboard.
Opposite this is a small lobby, opening into the first Double bedroom with dual North and Westerly aspect windows. A grand French wardrobe and other bedroom furniture complete the room.
The upper family Bathroom also opens off this Lobby, which has a spacious fully tiled Wet room with shower, basin and wc.
The second Guest Bedroom is a spacious ensuite Twin bedroom with a westerly window overlooking the grasssed area and the barns, and away to the west. It is complemented by a fully tiled en suite Shower room, including basin and wc.
The third Guest Bedroom is an ensuite Double bedroom with a fine southerly view. There are hanging tapestries, a large French wardrobe and occasional furniture. This room is also complemented with a fully tiled ensuite Wet room with large shower, basin and wc.
The fourth Guest Bedroom also enjoys the southerly view, and is an extremely large Twin bedroom : Supplementary single beds are stored under each of these beds making the occupancy of this room up to 4 singles if required.
Each bedroom has ample space, and includes a large French wardrobe for storage.
A hardwood staircase of rare quality in modern times leads down to the Ground Floor hall, somewhat smaller than its upstairs counterpart.
Immediately in front of the stairs, glazed double doors lead out directly onto the pool terrace.
Also off this small hall are a general store room for pool furniture, and also including a table tennis table, and a small utility store housing the washing machine.
Seen in the larger image, the large Lower Level Bathroom is behind the stairs.
This impressive and spacious bathroom, easily accessible from the poolside, is in Wet room style with completely tiled walls, and includes a Bath, Shower, basin and wc.
The final room is the extremely impressive Kitchen /Dining Room, with a long L-shaped run of quality fitted kitchen units, and a large antique oak Dining table and chairs, deceptively simple in its design, but with quality evident. With South and East aspect windows, this is a light and airy room throughout the day, and there are glazed double doors exiting both directly onto the poolside and also to the side of the house, making the Ground floor entrance referred to at the start of the description: This is the normal entrance, and easiest for guests with luggage.
Equipped to the high standard consistent with the rest of the house, the Kitchen includes a large gas range with hob and oven and this is complemented with a Fridge/Freezer, Microwave oven, Dishwasher and an excellent range of utensils.
Other additional seating is also in the Kitchen, but still leaving plenty of space in the room.
The main outdoor feature is the Swimming pool and sun terrace, which runs right up to the Ground floor of the house: The pool measures 12 x 6m, and has integral Roman steps for easy entry into the water. A safety alarm is fitted, and water purity maintained with chlorine. The terrace has lighting for Guests to enjoy pleasant outdoor evenings, and a barbecue is also provided.
With around 12 ha of land (30 acres) around La Rabiole, there is plenty of open space, mostly grassed, for guests to explore and enjoy.
A number of mature trees offer shaded peaceful spots away from the house for quiet times. There are two unused barns not far from the house, which help to retain the ambiance of a rural France of bygone times.
The countryside around La Rabiole is gently rolling, and agricultural with cereals and sunflowers predominant: Being slightly elevated, La Rabiole enjoys views to all points of the compass, and the peace of the French countryside will help soothe the tensions of everyday life away.

La Rabiole also sits in a rich wine area of the Cahors AOC, and the noted Vin du Tsar winery which is open for tastings and purchase is close by, and the English run Domaine du Garinet is also near. One of the World's Top 50 Wines for 2016 is produced a short distance away at Chateau de Chambert near Floressas, and many other vineyards and wineries offering tastings and direct sale prices are within a short drive, or Bordeaux and Bergerac are both less than an hour away. The area around La Rabiole is a rich area for food production, and travellers will see acres of sunflowers and cereals alongside soft fruit, nuts, vegetables and much more being grown as they travel around. Many of these products are available at markets which are held every day somewhere nearby. A list of the markets is in The Area information on the menu above.
The rolling landscape offers many excellent views, with the bastide hilltop towns or a chateau featuring in most views. Bastide towns such as Penne d'Agenais and Tournon d'Agenais always feature medieval fortifications, and timbered ancient houses on narrow streets, all leading to a grand square, and the views from the ramparts are always worth the climb. The countryside north of Fumel has two spectacular medieval chateaux that can be visited: Information on Chateau de Bonaguil and Chateau Biron is in 'The Area' information above.
The area is rich in history with many medieval towns close by, and Roman history in evidence at crossing points on the Lot as well. Puy l'Eveque and Villeneuve sur Lot are both interesting places to visit, as well as being points for river based activities. Penne d'Agenais has both a river crossing point at Port Penne and a medieval hilltop fortification on the top of which is an interesting silver domed Byzantine style church, with caves in the rock behind the church giving rise to legends.
For those seeking a different water based day, Montaigu Plage at Montaigu de Quercy is a large water park, with a large sandy beach area, safe lifeguard patrolled swimming, pedalo and boat hire, and zip wires across the lake for the brave. There are also bars and restaurants.
More information, including attractions aimed at the younger members of the family is given under 'The Area' at the top of the page.
