Why La Salamandre? The house was once home to a restaurant of that name, and the Owners chose to adopt it for the house and gîte.
La Salamandre is a ground floor gîte in the English Owner's house with spacious quality accommodation for 2 people. A large outdoor terrace and garden overlooks the very peaceful village of Pontcirq, where the local farmer still takes his cattle to pasture down the road early in the morning, and brings them in again in the evening.
The gite is ideally placed for exploring not only the Lot region but also many attractions of the Dordogne are within easy reach.
The town of Prayssac with its vibrant weekly market and many shops, restaurants and cafes is only 10 minutes drive. The beautiful medieval town of Cahors is 15 minutes away.
It is the perfect base for relaxing walks, sightseeing and exploring the many wine chateaux making the famous wines Cahors wines. If you are feeling more energetic you can swim in the nearby lake or take a canoe down the Lot or Dordogne river.
Many other activities such as horse-riding, cycling and hot air ballooning are all available nearby.
The gite benefits from its own private small garden a large terrace with table and chairs for alfresco dining. There is also a small separate sun terrace with nice views of the village and the surrounding countryside.
La Salamandre is a convenient base to explore the region with a view to purchasing their own property here in the beautiful Lot region.
Situated in the rolling wooded landscape north of the River Lot, there is easy access either to the river and the beautiful villages along it such as Prayssac, or north to picturesque villages such as Villefranche, and onward towards the Dordogne and the towns of Sarlat and Bergerac.
'We have had a lovely week here at La Salamandre. Everything about the gite and the terrace is wonderful, and Mark & Elaine have provided everything we could need'
Comfortable and peaceful base for exploring the Lot area: Couldn't be better - we'll be back!
There is an off road parking space available for occupants of La Salamandre.
The accommodation is all on the Ground floor and there are doors onto the long covered shaded terrace from the Kitchen, Bedroom and Bathroom, making it very flexible at all hours of the day and night.
Entering to the left, Guests pass the spacious bathroom with bath and shower over, wc and basin. The next room is the Kitchen, which is semi-traditional in style but well equipped with electric cooker and oven with extractor over, fridge, microwave and a range of utensils with ample worktop space in a well organised room.
The next room is the Double bedroom, with a King Sized double bed, bedside cabinets and lights, occasional furniture and glazed door out directly onto the terrace.
The Sitting Room is comfortably furnished in a contemporary style with two separate sofas, coffee table and occasional furniture: The television with Satellite English television is also here.
Heating throughout the gite - when required - is by electric wall mounted radiators.
'Lovely spacious gite - Great hosts. Mark and Elaine have thought of everything - even a mini library!'
The covered terrace runs the length of the gite, and there is a dining table and chairs for eating outdoors as well as a built in charcoal barbecue.
Sun loungers for use on the pleasantly landscaped lawn and garden are provided.
'Tranquility at its best! Relaxing and watching the world go by, and a great selection of walks along the River Lot.'
Away from the lawn and garden, a small terrace with a delightful view over the village and surrounding countryside has a table and chairs for guests to sit and enjoy the peace of the evening and sunset.

Pontcirq is an unspoiled French village, with the Mairie just across the road where events are often held, including a 'pop up' market usually held in the summer. The skyline is dominated by the church, but the atmosphere remains very gentle and rural.
To the south is the road that runs along the river Lot with picturesque towns all along its banks: To the west, Puy L'Eveque and Prayssac, while to the east Guests soon find the impressive sight of the steep sided gorge near Mercues before they reach the busy historic and commercial centre at Cahors and the world famous Pont Valentre, a gathering place for walkers on one of the St Jacques de Compostela trails across France.
Wine is produced all around the region, most notably around Prayssac and to the south of the River Lot with many wineries offering tastings and direct sales.
Many different foods are produced in the same area, and these are usually available at the markets, which will be held somewhere near on most days of the week: A list is available under 'The Area' above, or at the property. The many restaurants in the area offer dishes prepared with these products, and most of the wines on offer will usually be produced within a few miles
To the north of Pontcirq are the wooded hills as Quercy becomes Perigord with a variety of hardwoods growing - chestnut, oak and beech will all be found, and with other more herbaceous species also widespread, the autumn foliage goes through a wonderful display of colour in October and early November, and frosty mornings are also very special to behold.
The villages here have a charm of their own, especially Goujonac with its highly personalised street signs, and Villefranche with its ancient market place. A day wandering is highly recommended, and you are likely to end up at one or more of the castles in this area. Biron and Bonaguil are complete to visit, and there are others less complete, but very atmospheric with villages full of character around.
The steep sided villages of Rocamadour and St Cirq La Popie are both within easy reach, and that area to the north and east of Cahors is the national park of Causse de Quercy which contains many cave systems, notably Pech Merle. Further to the north are the world famous caves at Lascaux with prehistoric drawings on the walls.
Beyond this is the Dordogne which runs roughly parallel to the River Lot, and has a character of its own: Towns such as Gourdon, Sarlat and Bergerac have features that make them interesting to visit.
