New for 2017, Dournie Basse offers excellent family accommodation in an informal character property just off the road between Montaigu de Quercy and Roquecor.

With five bedrooms and including a good number of single beds, the sleeping arrangements are flexible for all families, and there is space both inside and outside for all members of the party to escape to their own space if they wish.

Dournie Basse stands at the end of the road and on the edge of small hilltop hamlet, and enjoys stunning views to the north and west across the valley. There is no passing traffic, save the odd farm vehicle, and the property is nicely separated from any nearby neighbours.

Accommodation

Parking for 2 vehicles is adjacent to the house.

Entering the house, you are in a lobby area off which all parts of the property lead:

To the right is a wc with basin at the bottom of the stairs leading up to two bedrooms and a separate bathroom.
BEDROOM 1 is a double room, and there is a supplementary single bed also.
BEDROOM 2 is a loft type bedroom which has three single beds and ideal for children: There is a low beam in this room which may have to be crossed.

Back to the lobby, straight ahead is the large kitchen with an impressive fireplace and traditional style sinks. Cooking is done on an impressive gas range, and there is also a dishwasher and fridge/freezer. A large table, seating up to 10 and some easy chairs by the fireplace complete the furnishing.

Opening through glazed doors is a beautiful large au vent balcony with a remarkable view across the valley to the north west over woodland and fields. A large table and chairs almost automatically make this the focus of the family activity with shade and cooling from the gentle rising air from the floor of the valley below.

dournbalcshddornviewThe balcony continues along the whole face of the house, and around the corner, steps lead down to the garden and pool. The balcony is netted for safety of younger members of the party.

From the kitchen, a door leads into BEDROOM 3, with a fireplace matching the kitchen: This room has two large single beds, and a chaise longue, and can double as a Sitting Room.

A couple of steps up lead onto a small gallery, off which is BEDROOM 4 - a good sized double room.   On the  opposite side of the Gallery is a large Shower room with wc. The gallery then leads back to the Entrance Lobby.

Again, from the entrance lobby, Stairs lead to a the Ground level, and under the stairs is a Utility area with a washing machine and plenty of storage.

dornbeddsOpening off the Utility area is a large tiled bathroom with a separate wc. The bathroom has a large free standing bath, walk in shower and basin. Doors open out onto the garden across from the Swimming pool.

A couple of steps down lead into BEDROOM 5 - a large double bedroom which being at ground level will be the coolest in summer: Glazed doors open onto the garden

Dournie Basse is a large house, and for families of 8 or 10 offers flexible accommodation with a good mixture of double beds, single beds and family rooms.

Outdoors

Dournie Basse is at the end of its own road in, and other than the occasional farm vehicle there is no passing traffic, making it safe for play. There is a good sized garden with a mixture of fruit trees and shrubs growing, and with land on both sides of the house, shade or sun can always be found.

The private Swimming Pool is partially above ground, with steps up, and from the pool area the spectacular view to the north and west can be enjoyed. The pool measures 3m x 9m, and also has a hard cover. Integral steps into the water aid entry for the less confident.

A table tennis table is provided, as is a charcoal barbeque.

A footpath runs right beside the house and this leads down into the oak woodland beside the house, offering great opportunities for the inquisitive to explore, or a great starting point for keen walkers to explore the ridge that runs from Montaigu de Quercy through to Lacour de Visa. The roads around Dournie Basse are very quiet, although undulating, for cyclists, but there are several opportunities to go off road with suitable bicycles which can be hired locally.

Around the area...

Dournie Basse is very well placed to enjoy the many attractions of the Quercy area, although the view from the balcony will be quite hard to equal as you travel around.

mdqmkt cheeseThe area is very rich in agriculture and food production, and you will see soft fruit, nuts, melons and vegetables growing in the fields alongside the usual sunflowers and cereal crops. Many of these products are available either fresh or made into delicious dishes at the local markets which can be found every day of the week. Montaigu de Quercy market is on a Saturday, and Roqueor and Montcuq are on Sundays. There is no finer way to eat than to buy direct from producers at the market and enjoy an outdoor lunch.

A list of the markets is available under the Area information above, or there should be a list at the property.

A few miles to the north, along the River Lot, is the centre of the Cahors AOC wine production area, with many wineries open for tastings and direct purchase: Many, such as Chateau Chambert near Floressas, are based in chateaux and farmhouses worthy of visiting themselves.

Eating out is a pleasure, as many of the restaurants use only locally sourced ingredients: Quality is generally high, and prices generally reasonable. Restaurant recommendations from Halcyon Leisure guests can be found in the Area information above

bironHistory and natural history abound locally, with medieval fortified villages to explore, and locally Pujols and Lauzerte are named among 'Les plus beaux villages de France'. From the hilltop villages evidence of long straight Roman roads can be seen, and both Villeneuve sur Lot and Cahors have evidence of Roman activity. Nearby Penne d'Agenais was a stronghold of Richard I (The Lionheart) of England.
To the north of the River Lot are two large castles that are worthy of visiting: Bonaguil often hosts events, and Biron can be seen on the skyline for miles around.

The major historical attraction of the area is at Moissac where the world famous Abbey and Cloisters are open to the public. Combining this with a visit to the rose coloured brick buildings of Montauban make a good day out.

The area to the north and east of Cahors is limestone country, and this means caves and gorges: Within an easy drive are the caves at Pech Merle which are a good visit, and not far from there is the very picturesque village of St Cirq La Popie which sits on a steep bank of the River Lot.

canoelotSports are well catered for, with plenty of footpath walking available, and bicycles available for hire locally. Tennis courts can be hired in both Montaigu de Quercy and Roquecor. The River Lot has a wide assortement of river based activities including fishing and boat hire. If you fancy a day at the beach, both Montaigu de Quercy and Montcuq have 'Bas de Loisirs' - Leisure lakes - with lifeguard patrolled safe swimming, sandy beach areas and water based attractions including boat hire and floating fun castles. There are bars and restaurants at the Montaigu de Quercy park.

For shopping, there is a supermarket and all other small town services at Montaigu de Quercy, and at Montayral near Fumel is a large out of town superstore.

Larger town shopping is available at Villeneuve sur Lot or Agen, and for a city experience you need to head to either Toulouse, approx 90 mins drive, or Bordeaux, 2 hours drive. Both cities have rich history and plenty to see and do: Toulouse is a noted centre of the aerospace industry, and Bordeaux is an international centre - indeed maybe the capital - of the world wine trade.
